R.I.P.

A few days ago, the day I've been dreading for months finally arrived: my precious laptop died.

*sniffle*

I'd had it since 2005, so its death was no surprise - 6 laptop years is like what? 150 human years? - but it still sucks. And it means that now I have to use Ben's desktop computer, which is arranged all weird and the keyboard feels funny and I can't curl up on the couch to sort photos and the like.

*sob*

Yeah, I know - first world problems. Anyway, blogging has clearly taken a back seat for the last few weeks with final assignments due in my classes, and now the death of my laptop. But the semester is nearly over and I've poached Ben's computer, so you should be getting more regular posts again - especially because it's nearly that time of year again (look for a 'stache voting post in the next few days!).

In the meantime, does anyone have a suggestions for a good laptop? I'm high maintenance and like 'em with full sized keyboards and 17" screens. Any recommendations?

6 shout-outs:

  1. i got a new laptop recently, after my old one (circa 2006) wasn't cutting it anymore. pretty happy with the dell xps i got!

  2. I have a Toshiba 17 inch laptop that I got about 4 years ago and I absolutely LOVE it!

    It has the full-size keyboard (with a real 10 key on the side) which is key for doing the family finances.

    I have never had a single issue with it and I have dropped it and moved it across the world (US to OZ). Highly recommend!

  3. I've spoken to Ben about this. Essentially 17in laptops w/ full size keyboards come in two flavours;

    * Professional Workstation Laptop (entry price $3500-$7000)
    * Crappy, cheaply put together laptop, that is about $1000 more expensive than a desktop equivalent. Entry Price about $2k

    I would *seriously* recommend against that form factor, or that you get a desktop.

  4. I got my Toshiba from Best Buy during an after Christmas sale. It was only about $800.00 including the extended warranty. If you find that they are overpriced (like most things here) than have a family member in the States get you one and ship it.

    I guess it depends what you use if for; but I do heavy duty photo editing on mine. Also gaming...

  5. Had my Dell Inspiron (reasonable price - £350 in the UK) and it does the job. And it's red. Ooooh, pretty.

  6. No advice on the laptop, but both my dudes are planning to do Movember this year! Neither of them has quite the hair farming skills as Ben, but it will be interesting to see which can grow a stache first. Hubby grows hair super slow and son is only 13, haha!
