Colder than...

The one thing I can't get used to about living in Australia is the reversal of seasons.

Right now it's cold. Really cold. Like this:

OK, not really like that. It doesn't usually snow where I live, but a picture of a dead lawn isn't nearly as interesting. But it is currently midday and only 4C (about 39F). Whining about that kind of temperature during winter might have Minnesotans laughing at me, but you have to keep in mind that 39F is colloquially known as "$#&!*%^@! FREEZING" to someone who grew up in California. If I had bollocks, they'd be frozen off.

I always feel the most homesick during winter weather like this. It's hard to put my finger on why - I think it's because I associate this with Christmas and visiting family, and have a hard time reconciling the idea that it's July and I live halfway across the planet from most of my nearest and dearest. Add to that the fact that it's the Fourth of July, and well...today is kind of a tough day. Don't get me wrong, I love Australia (obviously, or I never would have done this), but sometimes I still feel homesick.

Especially when it's colder than a well digger's ass. Which also reminds me - I miss my Nana today. Nanas have the best sayings ever.

2 shout-outs:

  1. -2C this morning, now that is cold

  2. Yup, I lived in Mt Eliza, south of Melbourne, for 4 years and I COULD NOT get used to the bone chilling rawness of the Aussie winter. It's like the cold and damp get into your bones and stays there until well into spring!

I moved there in November from a lovely warm New England Indian Summer - It was raining and nasty that day in Melbourne and we had 2 inches of hail two days later - wasn't what I expected! I mean where was all that blazing sun?!?!?!

Ah, well, even with the Aussie winter I would give might right arm to go back - and stay forever!
