It's Easter - Have a Bilby!I know. I KNOW. It's been six days since my last post, and the last Aussie Tip was back in January.
But I have something special to show you today, that I hope makes it worth the wait.
But first, a little nature lesson.
A bilby is a native Australian marsupial that looks vaguely like a cross between a rabbit and a rat:
Every time I see one of these, I think about a scene from Kangaroo Jack (yes I think it's funny in a really dreadful way, yes kangaroos really are the "rodents of the outback," and NO that is not what Alice Springs looks like) where a girl picks up a cage of bilbies and Louis tells her there is something REALLY wrong with her rabbits. Word, Louis - word.
Anyway - this is a chocolate bilby:

At some point, someone decided that in addition to the regular chocolate bunnies, Aussies would have chocolate bilbies at Easter, I presume in an effort to bring attention to the plight of the endangered animal.

Which is very admirable, and yet...I think as a kid, I'd be a little weirded out to find a bunny-rat in my Easter basket. But then again, Aussie kids are tougher than me. After all, they eat Vegemite.
P.S. Yes, I do realize that it's not Easter yet. I'm not that out of it. But we're leaving on an 11-night cruise the day after tomorrow, and since I'll be mostly internet-less for that time, I don't see much blogging happening. So Happy (early) Easter!

Ahh the Easter bilby. We didn't have these around when I was a child. I think they were actually released when I was a teenager. I am more of a fan about the rabbit shaped chocolate, for some reason biting the ears off is very satisfying.
ReplyDeleteI will send you one of my lil'people USB storage-thingies in exchange for a chocolate bunny-rat.
ReplyDeleteljkc, you totally have a deal.
